She was born in Tucson, Arizona (wow I'm surprised there weren't lynchings there) to a Black father and Filipino mother, later adopted by a different father (Jesse Leal, master sergeant). She began in daytime TV (Guiding Light) where she then joined Broadway RENT (Team America Made fun of this with "Everyone had AIDS"). She then land a role in DreamGirls as the 4th Dream (BWAHAHAH J.Hud's Character got kicked out and replaced by her). She has then starred in a slew of other black ensemble cast such as Why did i get married, This Christmas, etc ,etc
